Traffic

A recent traffic study performed by the Vernon Township showed over 2,000 vehicles cutting through Schaeffer/Checker Rd. Given the low household count within a quarter-mile, it is safe to assume that this traffic uses our local streets to cut-through.

What’s the Cause?

During the morning commute, vehicles travel east on Lake Cook Rd and attempt to turn North onto Arlington Heights Rd. Due to the single turn lane and short signal duration, traffic regularly gets backed up. Much of this traffic comes from Route 53 exiting at Lake Cook Rd.

This causes vehicles to turn North onto Schaeffer Rd to avoid that traffic:

During the afternoon commute, vehicles travel south on Arlington Heights Rd and attempt to turn West onto Lake Cook Rd. Just as above, this intersection only has a single turn lane with a short signal duration causing traffic to back up.

Violations

The traffic study showed that nearly all vehicles exceeded the post speed limit, with a significant amount exceeding the speed limit by 20 MPH. Further, numerous traffic violations regularly take place (forward to 1:40):
